DR. JOAN L. WHARTON

Dr. Joan L. Wharton was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland.  She was educated in the Baltimore City Public Schools.  She has a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County; a Masters from Howard University School of Divinity in Washington, D.C.; and a Doctor of Ministry from the United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio.

Dr. Wharton is the Senior Pastor of Hemingway Temple AME Church located in the Cherry Hill area of Baltimore City. She serves as the Co-Chair of the Cherry Hill Community Coalition. As a church development consultant, revivalist, retreat presenter, and teacher, Dr. Wharton has traveled extensively at home and aboard taking her ministerial work to the far corners of the earth. Dr. Joan L. Wharton has evangelized in places such as Ghana, West Africa, the Holy Land, Israel, Guyana South America, Bermuda and Trinidad.  She was inspired to write one of her earlier publications, “A Women’s Project To Be Used In Churches: A Guide for Developing Women’s Ministries.” She has authored; 40 Day Danielfast Prayer Journal; TGIF-Thank God I’m Fasting: A 40 Day Journey of Prayers and Meditations and Seasonal Women: A Collection of Meditations and Reflections for Women of All Seasons and a 40-day Prayer Journal. Her writings, meditations and prayers have also been published in the Women of Color Study Bible, edited by Marjorie H. Lawson, Sister to Sister: Devotions for and from African American Women, edited by Suzan D. Johnson Cook, and Women in Ministry: Their Trials and Their Triumphs by Dr. Mankekolo Ngcobo. She has written articles for the AME Review and the AME Christian Recorder.

 

Dr. Wharton is a member of the DELTA SIGMA THETA SORORITY, INC. and the NATIONAL COALITION OF 100 BLACK WOMEN.

 

Dr. Wharton is the proud mother of two sons, Darnyle and Simeon and two daughters in love, Danielle Cage Wharton and "Angela Wharton". Her pride and joy are her grandchildren, Asia, Laila, Simone and Austin.
